Geschichte zu Omis
Omiš was famous in the Middle Ages for the Corsairs of Almissa (Omiški gusari) whose ships Sagittas brought fame to them because they were built for attack and fast retrieval into the mouth of the Cetina River, protecting the town from foreign invaders. Omiš was encircled by walls, fortified with strongholds on the eastern land side, and fortress “Peovica” (Mirabella) on the north-western side.
Omiš is mentioned in many historical sources by names such as Onaion (Oneon), Holm (Hum), Nestos, Oneum (Onaeum), Olmisi, Olmissium, Almivssium, and Almissa. The oldest artefacts that mention Omis date back to Greek and Roman times.
The preRomanesque St. Peter's church from the 10th century is the most important building in the city because it was used as a Glagolithic seminary for novice priests.
The Turks tried to conquer Omiš several times, but despite the fact that they conquered the nearby hinterland, Omiš had never fallen into their hands. The old pirate town was conquered in 1444 by Venice.
